In de Wet op de lijkbezorging is vastgelegd dat de lichamen van onze doden een goede bestemming moeten krijgen. Toegestaan zijn begraven, cremeren, doneren aan de wetenschap, en in uitzonderlijke gevallen een zeemansgraf.  Er zijn echter nieuwe technieken in ontwikkeling, zoals alkalische hydrolyse en composteren. Gezien deze ontwikkelingen heeft de minister van Binnenlandse Zaken en Koninkrijksrelaties de Gezondheidsraad verzocht een beoordelingskader op te stellen voor de toelaatbaarheid van nieuwe vormen van lijkbezorging. Kernwaarden daarbij zijn veiligheid, waardigheid en duurzaamheid. Volgens het door de raad voorgestelde kader is alkalische hydrolyse in beginsel wel en composteren vooralsnog niet toelaatbaar. In accordance with Dutch law, a body of a deceased person can be buried, cremated or donated to science. New techniques are being developed, like alkaline hydrolysis and composting. At the request of the Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations, the Health Council of the Netherlands proposed a framework that can be utilised to assess the admissibility of such new techniques. Three values should be taken as guidelines: safety, dignity and sustainability. Alkaline hydrolysis fulfills the conditions, according to the Council. Too little is known about composting and hence it cannot be assessed whether this technique fulfills the conditions. You can find the advisory report and the executive summary here:
